Fill a window box in three steps

Line the box
Fill it to about two inches below the rim with floral foam, packed soil or even a folded towel, so each stem has something to grip. Our hanging basket kit already comes with a foam dome and a leaf liner.

Set the tall ones at the back
Push lavender and the 15.8-inch impatiens in along the wall side first, then the 13.8 to 14.2-inch bundles in front of them, leaning a little forward.

Fan the stems
Every stem has wire inside. Spread the outer stems of each bundle over the rim so the front edge disappears, then bend a few flowers down toward the street.

How many bundles
Measure your box before you pick a pack
Three measurements settle it: length, depth and how much sun the spot gets.
Measure the length
Run a tape along the inside of the box. For a full look, plan on a bundle every 3 to 4 inches, so a 24-inch box takes six to eight and a 36-inch box ten to twelve.
Check the depth
Most of our outdoor stems stand 13.8 to 14.2 inches. In a box deeper than 8 inches, stand the stems on a layer of foam so the blooms clear the rim.
Count both sides
A planter seen from the sidewalk and the window needs bundles facing both ways. Add a third to your count.
Note the sun
A south or west wall gets the most afternoon sun, and that is where any faux flower fades first. The outdoor care page says what slows it down.
Leave room for greens
Eucalyptus or a few lavender spikes between the blooms make a box look planted rather than packed.
Count a dozen for a basket
A 12-inch hanging basket takes about a dozen bundles. Our basket kit comes with twelve, a rattan basket and a chain.
